PLAYWRIGHT HENRY ONG WINS CITY OF LOS ANGELES GRANT TO DEVELOP CHRISTMAS PLAY FOR DEAF SCHOOL

Los Angeles, CA--(September 10, 2003) Playwright Henry Ong has been awarded a 2003 2004 City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department grant to develop a play for Marlton Charter School, Los Angeles' only day school for the deaf.

"We are thrilled to have playwright Henry Ong return to our school to work with our staff and students in our drama program," said Cecilia Perea, Marlton's Principal. Last summer, the school produced the well-received "Golden Flower Princess," a Thai folktale that Ong adapted. Marlton Charter School is located at 4000 Santo Tomas Drive, Los Angeles in Council District 8.

For the 2003-2004 grant, Ong will develop an original play entitled "The Old Lady Who Popped Out of the Sidewalk and Became a Christmas Tree." The play will be performed by the school's deaf students in December as part of the school's holiday program.

In addition to working with staff and students on the play, Ong will conduct workshops at Marlton on various topics, ranging from acting; lighting; to set and costume design.

"I hope to be able to stimulate interest in the students in all aspects of production, not just performing," said Ong, a six-time Cultural Affairs grant recipient. "It'll be fun to have the students contribute ideas that can be incorporated into the actual design and production of the show."

Ong is an internationally-produced playwright, whose signature play, "Madame Mao's Memories," based on the life of Chairman Mao's widow, was performed in Singapore, London and Edinburgh, in addition to many U.S. cities, including San Diego at the prestigious Old Globe Theatre. He also wrote "People Like Me," "Fabric," and "Sweet Karma."

A member of the Dramatist Guild, the Los Angeles Stage Alliance and the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, he is the Literary Manager of Playwrights' Arena.
